Here's Why Arcadis (AMS:ARCAD) Has Caught The Eye Of Investors

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Arcadis (AMS:ARCAD). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Fast Is Arcadis Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Arcadis' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Impressively, Arcadis' EPS catapulted from €1.27 to €2.25, over the last year. Year on year growth of 77% is certainly a sight to behold.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Arcadis maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 8.1% to €5.0b. That's progress.

Are Arcadis Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €5.5b company like Arcadis. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at €31m. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 0.6% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. For companies with market capitalisations between €3.8b and €11b, like Arcadis, the median CEO pay is around €2.3m.

The Arcadis CEO received €1.7m in compensation for the year ending December 2023. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Should You Add Arcadis To Your Watchlist?

Arcadis' earnings have taken off in quite an impressive fashion. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The drastic earnings growth indicates the business is going from strength to strength. Hopefully a trend that continues well into the future. Big growth can make big winners, so the writing on the wall tells us that Arcadis is worth considering carefully. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 1 warning sign for Arcadis that you should be aware of.

Although Arcadis certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see companies with more skin in the game, then check out this handpicked selection of Dutch companies that not only boast of strong growth but have strong insider backing.
