Salutica Berhad's (KLSE:SALUTE) Popularity With Investors Under Threat As Stock Sinks 33%
The Salutica Berhad (KLSE:SALUTE) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 33%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 33% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, when almost half of the companies in Malaysia's Electronic industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.5x, you may still consider Salutica Berhad as a stock not worth researching with its 4.4x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Has Salutica Berhad Performed Recently?
For instance, Salutica Berhad's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Salutica Berhad would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 56%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 75% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 40% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Salutica Berhad's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price drop, Salutica Berhad's P/S still exceeds the industry median significantly. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Salutica Berhad currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
