Examining Cashflow Against Cropmate Berhad's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.

That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

For the year to September 2025, Cropmate Berhad had an accrual ratio of 0.28. We can therefore deduce that its free cash flow fell well short of covering its statutory profit. Even though it reported a profit of RM13.4m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through RM4.9m in the last year. We saw that FCF was RM12m a year ago though, so Cropmate Berhad has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past. One positive for Cropmate Berhad shareholders is that it's accrual ratio was significantly better last year, providing reason to believe that it may return to stronger cash conversion in the future. Shareholders should look for improved cashflow relative to profit in the current year, if that is indeed the case.

Our Take On Cropmate Berhad's Profit Performance

Cropmate Berhad's accrual ratio for the last twelve months signifies cash conversion is less than ideal, which is a negative when it comes to our view of its earnings. Because of this, we think that it may be that Cropmate Berhad's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. In further bad news, its earnings per share decreased in the last year.
