Uzma Berhad's (KLSE:UZMA) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 26%
Uzma Berhad (KLSE:UZMA) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 48% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in Malaysia have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 15x, you may still consider Uzma Berhad as a highly attractive investment with its 5.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Uzma Berhad has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Uzma Berhad?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Uzma Berhad's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 18%. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 12% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. With the market predicted to deliver 15% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we are not surprised that Uzma Berhad is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Uzma Berhad's P/E
Even after such a strong price move, Uzma Berhad's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Uzma Berhad's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
