As a general rule, we think profitable companies are less risky than companies that lose money. Having said that, sometimes statutory profit levels are not a good guide to ongoing profitability, because some short term one-off factor has impacted profit levels. In this article, we'll look at how useful this year's statutory profit is, when analysing Icon Offshore Berhad (KLSE:ICON).

While Icon Offshore Berhad was able to generate revenue of RM211.3m in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of RM35.5m was more important. The chart below shows that while revenue is flat over the last three years, the company has moved from unprofitable to profitable.

Of course, when it comes to statutory profit, the devil is often in the detail, and we can get a better sense for a company by diving deeper into the financial statements. Therefore, today we will consider the nature of Icon Offshore Berhad's statutory earnings with reference to its dilution of shareholders and the impact of unusual items. That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, Icon Offshore Berhad issued 11,217% more new shares over the last year. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. How Is Dilution Impacting Icon Offshore Berhad's Earnings Per Share? (EPS)

Icon Offshore Berhad was losing money three years ago. And even focusing only on the last twelve months, we don't have a meaningful growth rate because it made a loss a year ago, too. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. So you can see that the dilution has had a fairly significant impact on shareholders.

In the long term, if Icon Offshore Berhad's earnings per share can increase, then the share price should too. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit

Finally, we should also consider the fact that unusual items boosted Icon Offshore Berhad's net profit by RM43m over the last year. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. We can see that Icon Offshore Berhad's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to September 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On Icon Offshore Berhad's Profit Performance

In its last report Icon Offshore Berhad benefitted from unusual items which boosted its profit, which could make the profit seem better than it really is on a sustainable basis. On top of that, the dilution means that its earnings per share performance is worse than its profit performance. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that Icon Offshore Berhad'sunderlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers.
