Slammed 27% Avillion Berhad (KLSE:AVI) Screens Well Here But There Might Be A Catch

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Avillion Berhad (KLSE:AVI) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 38% share price drop.

Following the heavy fall in price, Avillion Berhad's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Hospitality industry in Malaysia, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.7x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Avillion Berhad's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Avillion Berhad has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Avillion Berhad's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Avillion Berhad would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 23%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 152% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 4.3% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Avillion Berhad's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Avillion Berhad's P/S

The southerly movements of Avillion Berhad's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We're very surprised to see Avillion Berhad currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. Potential investors that are sceptical over continued revenue performance may be preventing the P/S ratio from matching previous strong performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
