Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Kumpulan Fima Berhad (KLSE:KFIMA). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Kumpulan Fima Berhad's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Who among us would not applaud Kumpulan Fima Berhad's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 48%, compound, over the last three years? While that sort of growth rate isn't sustainable for long, it certainly catches my attention; like a crow with a sparkly stone.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Kumpulan Fima Berhad's EBIT margins have actually improved by 11.0 percentage points in the last year, to reach 16%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 6.6%. That's not ideal.

Kumpulan Fima Berhad isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of RM512m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Kumpulan Fima Berhad Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Kumpulan Fima Berhad insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 48% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I'm always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. In terms of absolute value, insiders have RM244m invested in the business, using the current share price. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Should You Add Kumpulan Fima Berhad To Your Watchlist?

Kumpulan Fima Berhad's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Kumpulan Fima Berhad for a spot on your watchlist.
