We Think That There Are More Issues For Azam Jaya Berhad (KLSE:AZAMJAYA) Than Just Sluggish Earnings
The subdued market reaction suggests that Azam Jaya Berhad's (KLSE:AZAMJAYA) recent earnings didn't contain any surprises. Our analysis suggests that along with soft profit numbers, investors should be aware of some other underlying weaknesses in the numbers.
A Closer Look At Azam Jaya Berhad's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to September 2025, Azam Jaya Berhad recorded an accrual ratio of 0.27. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of RM68m despite its profit of RM7.49m, mentioned above. We also note that Azam Jaya Berhad's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of RM68m.

Our Take On Azam Jaya Berhad's Profit Performance
Azam Jaya Berhad didn't convert much of its profit to free cash flow in the last year, which some investors may consider rather suboptimal. Because of this, we think that it may be that Azam Jaya Berhad's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. In further bad news, its earnings per share decreased in the last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
