Grupo Vasconia's (BMV:VASCONI) Robust Earnings Are Not All Good News For Shareholders
Despite posting strong earnings, Grupo Vasconia, S.A.B.'s (BMV:VASCONI) stock didn't move much over the last week. We decided to have a deeper look, and we believe that investors might be worried about several concerning factors that we found.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
For anyone who wants to understand Grupo Vasconia's profit beyond the statutory numbers, it's important to note that during the last twelve months statutory profit gained from Mex$193m worth of unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. Grupo Vasconia had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to March 2021. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Just as we noted the unusual items, we must inform you that Grupo Vasconia received a tax benefit which contributed Mex$26m to the bottom line. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! Of course, prima facie it's great to receive a tax benefit. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. While we think it's good that the company has booked a tax benefit, it does mean that there's every chance the statutory profit will come in a lot higher than it would be if the income was adjusted for one-off factors.
Our Take On Grupo Vasconia's Profit Performance
In its last report Grupo Vasconia received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. And on top of that, it also saw an unusual item boost its profit, suggesting that next year might see a lower profit number, if these events are not repeated. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that Grupo Vasconia'sunderlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved.
