Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. For example, the Dongyang Express Corp. (KRX:084670) share price is down 11% in the last year. That falls noticeably short of the market return of around 46%. Taking the longer term view, the stock fell 11% over the last three years. Furthermore, it's down 10% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the unfortunate twelve months during which the Dongyang Express share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 85%. It's quite possible that growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
It's fair to say that the share price does not seem to be reflecting the EPS growth. So it's well worth checking out some other metrics, too.
We don't see any weakness in the Dongyang Express' dividend so the steady payout can't really explain the share price drop. In fact, it seems more likely that the revenue fall of 28% in the last year is the worry. The market may be extrapolating the decline, leading to questions around the sustainability of the EPS.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Dongyang Express' TSR for the last year was -2.4%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Dongyang Express had a tough year, with a total loss of 2.4% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 46%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 6%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
