Would LAON PEOPLE (KOSDAQ:300120) Be Better Off With Less Debt?
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, LAON PEOPLE Inc (KOSDAQ:300120) does carry debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is LAON PEOPLE's Net Debt?
As you can see below, at the end of September 2024, LAON PEOPLE had ₩37.8b of debt, up from ₩29.8b a year ago. Click the image for more detail. However, it does have ₩21.6b in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about ₩16.2b.
How Strong Is LAON PEOPLE's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that LAON PEOPLE had liabilities of ₩56.4b due within a year, and liabilities of ₩12.0b falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₩21.6b and ₩17.4b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₩29.4b.
LAON PEOPLE has a market capitalization of ₩90.0b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is LAON PEOPLE's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, LAON PEOPLE reported revenue of ₩131b, which is a gain of 854%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. When it comes to revenue growth, that's like nailing the game winning 3-pointer!
Caveat Emptor
Even though LAON PEOPLE managed to grow its top line quite deftly, the cold hard truth is that it is losing money on the EBIT line. Its EBIT loss was a whopping ₩16b. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled ₩41b in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for LAON PEOPLE (of which 2 make us uncomfortable!) you should know about.
When all is said and done, sometimes its easier to focus on companies that don't even need debt. Readers can access a list of growth stocks with zero net debt 100% free, right now.
