Chips&Media (KOSDAQ:094360) Posted Healthy Earnings But There Are Some Other Factors To Be Aware Of
Investors were disappointed with Chips&Media, Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:094360) earnings, despite the strong profit numbers. We did some digging and found some worrying underlying problems.
How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Importantly, our data indicates that Chips&Media's profit received a boost of ₩1.2b in unusual items, over the last year. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. Assuming those unusual items don't show up again in the current year, we'd thus expect profit to be weaker next year (in the absence of business growth, that is).
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that Chips&Media received a tax benefit of ₩944m. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. Of course, prima facie it's great to receive a tax benefit. And given that it lost money last year, it seems possible that the benefit is evidence that it now expects to find value in its past tax losses. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth.
Our Take On Chips&Media's Profit Performance
In its last report Chips&Media received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. Furthermore, it also benefitted from a positive unusual item, which boosted the profit result even higher. Considering all this we'd argue Chips&Media's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability. Obviously, we love to consider the historical data to inform our opinion of a company. But it can be really valuable to consider what other analysts are forecasting. Our examination of Chips&Media has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. And, on that basis, we are somewhat skeptical.
