PPI Inc. (KOSDAQ:062970) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 29% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 8.8% in the last twelve months.

Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies operating in Korea's Communications industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.1x, you may consider PPI as a stock to potentially avoid with its 1.7x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does PPI's Recent Performance Look Like?

For instance, PPI's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for PPI, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is PPI's Revenue Growth Trending?

PPI's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 32% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 34% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 36% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that PPI is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From PPI's P/S?

PPI's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that PPI currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. When we see revenue heading backwards and underperforming the industry forecasts, we feel the possibility of the share price declining is very real, bringing the P/S back into the realm of reasonability. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
