Hanssak (KOSDAQ:430690) Is Carrying A Fair Bit Of Debt

Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Hanssak Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:430690) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Hanssak Carry?

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of June 2025 Hanssak had ₩8.89b of debt, an increase on ₩2.00b, over one year. However, it does have ₩2.41b in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about ₩6.49b.

A Look At Hanssak's Liabilities

We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Hanssak had liabilities of ₩13.3b falling due within a year, and liabilities of ₩383.8m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had ₩2.41b in cash and ₩2.72b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total ₩8.59b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

Of course, Hanssak has a market capitalization of ₩77.9b, so these liabilities are probably manageable. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Hanssak will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.

In the last year Hanssak had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 16%, to ₩21b. We would much prefer see growth.

Caveat Emptor

While Hanssak's falling revenue is about as heartwarming as a wet blanket, arguably its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is even less appealing. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at ₩2.5b. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. However, it doesn't help that it burned through ₩15b of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Hanssak you should be aware of, and 1 of them is significant.
