Some Itcen Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:124500) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 25% Pounding
Itcen Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:124500) shares have retraced a considerable 25% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 21% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Itcen's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.7x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 10x and even P/E's below 6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Itcen certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Itcen, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. How Is Itcen's Growth Trending?
Itcen's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 100% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen a 7.5% overall rise in EPS, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 33% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we find it concerning that Itcen is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price drop, Itcen's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Itcen revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
Having said that, be aware Itcen is showing 5 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those make us uncomfortable.
