Green Resource Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:402490) May Have Run Too Fast Too Soon With Recent 25% Price Plummet
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Green Resource Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:402490) shares are down a considerable 25% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Green Resource may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 42.4x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios under 10x and even P/E's lower than 6x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Green Resource over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Green Resource's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 10% decrease to the company's bottom line. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 56% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's alarming that Green Resource's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On Green Resource's P/E
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Green Resource's very lofty P/E. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Green Resource revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
It is also worth noting that we have found 3 warning signs for Green Resource (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to take into consideration.
