WOT (KOSDAQ:396470) Is Reinvesting At Lower Rates Of Return
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. In light of that, when we looked at WOT (KOSDAQ:396470) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for WOT, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.046 = ₩3.0b ÷ (₩67b - ₩2.0b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
Therefore, WOT has an ROCE of 4.6%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Semiconductor industry average of 6.3%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
In terms of WOT's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Around four years ago the returns on capital were 25%, but since then they've fallen to 4.6%. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a related note, WOT has decreased its current liabilities to 3.0% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
In Conclusion...
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for WOT. And there could be an opportunity here if other metrics look good too, because the stock has declined 41% in the last year. So we think it'd be worthwhile to look further into this stock given the trends look encouraging.
