The Taesung Co.,Ltd. (KOSDAQ:323280) share price has softened a substantial 33% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Regardless, last month's decline is barely a blip on the stock's price chart as it has gained a monstrous 478% in the last year.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking TaesungLtd is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 10.8x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Semiconductor industry have P/S ratios below 1.3x. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does TaesungLtd's Recent Performance Look Like?

TaesungLtd certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to outperform the wider market, which has seemingly got people interested in the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, TaesungLtd would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 78%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 35% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 30% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it concerning that TaesungLtd is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On TaesungLtd's P/S

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate TaesungLtd's very lofty P/S. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

The fact that TaesungLtd currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these the share price as being reasonable.
