Is Carry (KOSDAQ:313760) Using Too Much Debt?

David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Carry Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:313760) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is Carry's Debt?

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of September 2025 Carry had ₩18.2b of debt, an increase on ₩14.2b, over one year. However, it does have ₩4.78b in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about ₩13.5b.

How Strong Is Carry's Balance Sheet?

We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Carry had liabilities of ₩33.7b falling due within a year, and liabilities of ₩2.60b due beyond that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of ₩4.78b as well as receivables valued at ₩5.52b due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling ₩26.0b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

The deficiency here weighs heavily on the ₩16.0b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we definitely think shareholders need to watch this one closely. After all, Carry would likely require a major re-capitalisation if it had to pay its creditors today. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Carry will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.

Over 12 months, Carry saw its revenue hold pretty steady, and it did not report positive earnings before interest and tax. While that's not too bad, we'd prefer see growth.

Caveat Emptor

Importantly, Carry had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. Indeed, it lost a very considerable ₩3.8b at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above make us nervous about the company. It would need to improve its operations quickly for us to be interested in it. Not least because it had negative free cash flow of ₩5.5b over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we consider the stock to be risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. Be aware that Carry is showing 6 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 3 of those are a bit concerning...
