Those holding C&G Hi Tech Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:264660) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 29% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 4.7% over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that C&G Hi Tech's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Semiconductor industry in Korea, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.3x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How C&G Hi Tech Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at C&G Hi Tech over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For C&G Hi Tech?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, C&G Hi Tech would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 37%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 37% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 42% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that C&G Hi Tech's P/S is comparable to that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now C&G Hi Tech's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of C&G Hi Tech revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
