Subdued Growth No Barrier To Neosem Inc. (KOSDAQ:253590) With Shares Advancing 34%
Those holding Neosem Inc. (KOSDAQ:253590) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 34% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. The last month tops off a massive increase of 195% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Neosem is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 5.7x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Semiconductor industry have P/S ratios below 1.3x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Has Neosem Performed Recently?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Neosem's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Neosem's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 26%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 137% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the lone analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 55% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 64% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that Neosem's P/S is outpacing its industry peers. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What Does Neosem's P/S Mean For Investors?
The strong share price surge has lead to Neosem's P/S soaring as well. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've concluded that Neosem currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its forecast growth is lower than the wider industry. When we see a weak revenue outlook, we suspect the share price faces a much greater risk of declining, bringing back down the P/S figures. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
