Mecaro (KOSDAQ:241770) Share Prices Have Dropped 63% In The Last Three Years
The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But long term Mecaro Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:241770) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. Unfortunately, they have held through a 63% decline in the share price in that time. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 9.2% in thirty days.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Mecaro saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Mecaro's TSR for the last 3 years was -60%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Mecaro shareholders are up 61% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return of around 69%. On the bright side, that's certainly better than the yearly loss of about 17% endured over the last three years, implying that the company is doing better recently. We hope the turnaround in fortunes continues. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Mecaro better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Mecaro (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
