If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. In light of that, when we looked at BCnC (KOSDAQ:146320) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on BCnC is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.0083 = ₩811m ÷ (₩159b - ₩62b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).

So, BCnC has an ROCE of 0.8%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Semiconductor industry average of 5.4%.

The Trend Of ROCE

On the surface, the trend of ROCE at BCnC doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 14% over the last four years. However it looks like BCnC might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.

In Conclusion...

Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by BCnC's reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. Since the stock has declined 40% over the last year, investors may not be too optimistic on this trend improving either. All in all, the inherent trends aren't typical of multi-baggers, so if that's what you're after, we think you might have more luck elsewhere.
