Some TES Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:095610) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 25% Pounding

TES Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:095610) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 25% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 13% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 12x, you may still consider TES as a stock to avoid entirely with its 42.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

For instance, TES' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For TES?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as TES' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 74%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 84% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 33% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's alarming that TES' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From TES' P/E?

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate TES' very lofty P/E. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of TES revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 4 warning signs for TES (1 is a bit unpleasant) you should be aware of.
