As DE&T (KOSDAQ:079810) swells 10% this past week, investors may now be noticing the company's one-year earnings growth

Simply Wall St

It is doubtless a positive to see that the DE&T Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:079810) share price has gained some 33% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 30% in the last year, significantly under-performing the market.

While the last year has been tough for DE&T shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the unfortunate twelve months during which the DE&T share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 62%. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped.

It's fair to say that the share price does not seem to be reflecting the EPS growth. But we might find some different metrics explain the share price movements better.

In contrast, the 18% drop in revenue is a real concern. Many investors see falling revenue as a likely precursor to lower earnings, so this could well explain the weak share price.

A Different Perspective

DE&T shareholders are down 30% for the year, but the market itself is up 10%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.9% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
