Sphere Power Inc. (KOSDAQ:203690) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 44% after a shaky period beforehand. The last month tops off a massive increase of 206% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Sphere Power may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in Korea have P/S ratios greater than 10.9x and even P/S higher than 36x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Sphere Power's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Sphere Power certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dwindle, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Sphere Power's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Sphere Power's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 36% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 178% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 36% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Sphere Power's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Even after such a strong price move, Sphere Power's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We're very surprised to see Sphere Power currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
