Ark Solutions Inc (KOSDAQ:203690) Surges 34% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement
Ark Solutions Inc (KOSDAQ:203690) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 34% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 43% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Ark Solutions' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.4x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 10.5x and even P/S above 40x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Ark Solutions Has Been Performing
For instance, Ark Solutions' receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Ark Solutions' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 4.0% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 47% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
In light of this, it's understandable that Ark Solutions' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price move, Ark Solutions' P/S still trails the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Ark Solutions revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
