There's No Escaping DNA Link, Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:127120) Muted Revenues Despite A 27% Share Price Rise
Despite an already strong run, DNA Link, Inc. (KOSDAQ:127120) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 26% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, DNA Link may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 5.1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in Korea have P/S ratios greater than 10.8x and even P/S higher than 43x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has DNA Link Performed Recently?
We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, DNA Link's revenue has been unimpressive. Perhaps the market believes the recent lacklustre revenue performance is a sign of future underperformance relative to industry peers, hurting the P/S. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

DNA Link's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. This isn't what shareholders were looking for as it means they've been left with a 3.5% decline in revenue over the last three years in total. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 45% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this in mind, we understand why DNA Link's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Bottom Line On DNA Link's P/S
Shares in DNA Link have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of DNA Link revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
