The last three months have been tough on Bioneer Corporation (KOSDAQ:064550) shareholders, who have seen the share price decline a rather worrying 34%. But that doesn't detract from the splendid returns of the last year. We're very pleased to report the share price shot up 166% in that time. So some might not be surprised to see the price retrace some. Investors should be wondering whether the business itself has the fundamental value required to continue to drive gains.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year Bioneer grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.

When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements).

We think that the revenue growth of 322% could have some investors interested. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Bioneer has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 166% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 11%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Bioneer better, we need to consider many other factors.
