BINEX Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:053030) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 35% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. The annual gain comes to 132% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking BINEX is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 4.9x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Pharmaceuticals industry have P/S ratios below 0.8x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has BINEX Performed Recently?

BINEX could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as BINEX's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 19%. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 32% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 17% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that BINEX's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

The strong share price surge has lead to BINEX's P/S soaring as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of BINEX's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
