Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that BINEX Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:053030) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is BINEX's Net Debt?
As you can see below, at the end of September 2024, BINEX had ₩64.6b of debt, up from ₩55.7b a year ago. Click the image for more detail. However, it also had ₩8.74b in cash, and so its net debt is ₩55.8b.
A Look At BINEX's Liabilities
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that BINEX had liabilities of ₩93.0b falling due within a year, and liabilities of ₩6.82b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had ₩8.74b in cash and ₩17.5b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling ₩73.6b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Since publicly traded BINEX shares are worth a total of ₩630.6b, it seems unlikely that this level of liabilities would be a major threat. However, we do think it is worth keeping an eye on its balance sheet strength, as it may change over time. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine BINEX's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
In the last year BINEX had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 19%, to ₩130b. That's not what we would hope to see.
Caveat Emptor
While BINEX's falling revenue is about as heartwarming as a wet blanket, arguably its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is even less appealing. Indeed, it lost ₩27b at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled ₩34b in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for BINEX you should know about.
