NCSOFT Corporation's (KRX:036570) P/E Is Still On The Mark Following 35% Share Price Bounce
The NCSOFT Corporation (KRX:036570) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 35%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 12% is also fairly reasonable.
After such a large jump in price, NCSOFT's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 53.5x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 12x and even P/E's below 7x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
NCSOFT could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is NCSOFT's Growth Trending?
NCSOFT's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 50%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 84% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 49% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 18% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why NCSOFT is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
Shares in NCSOFT have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of NCSOFT's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
