The Returns On Capital At NAVER (KRX:035420) Don't Inspire Confidence
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Although, when we looked at NAVER (KRX:035420), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for NAVER:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.066 = ₩2.1t ÷ (₩39t - ₩7.6t) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).
So, NAVER has an ROCE of 6.6%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Interactive Media and Services industry average of 12%.

So How Is NAVER's ROCE Trending?
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at NAVER doesn't inspire confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 6.6% from 11% five years ago. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a related note, NAVER has decreased its current liabilities to 19% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
The Key Takeaway
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for NAVER. And there could be an opportunity here if other metrics look good too, because the stock has declined 21% in the last five years. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
