Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Although, when we looked at PlayD (KOSDAQ:237820), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for PlayD, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.014 = ₩1.1b ÷ (₩120b - ₩40b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
Thus, PlayD has an ROCE of 1.4%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Media industry average of 8.6%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
When we looked at the ROCE trend at PlayD, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 18% over the last one year. Given the business is employing more capital while revenue has slipped, this is a bit concerning. If this were to continue, you might be looking at a company that is trying to reinvest for growth but is actually losing market share since sales haven't increased.
On a related note, PlayD has decreased its current liabilities to 34% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
The Bottom Line
In summary, we're somewhat concerned by PlayD's diminishing returns on increasing amounts of capital. And, the stock has remained flat over the last year, so investors don't seem too impressed either. That being the case, unless the underlying trends revert to a more positive trajectory, we'd consider looking elsewhere.
