There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. In light of that, when we looked at DSR (KRX:155660) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on DSR is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.07 = ₩12b ÷ (₩256b - ₩84b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).

Therefore, DSR has an ROCE of 7.0%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 8.0% average generated by the Chemicals industry.

So How Is DSR's ROCE Trending?

On the surface, the trend of ROCE at DSR doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 10% over the last five years. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.

The Bottom Line On DSR's ROCE

To conclude, we've found that DSR is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Although the market must be expecting these trends to improve because the stock has gained 47% over the last five years. But if the trajectory of these underlying trends continue, we think the likelihood of it being a multi-bagger from here isn't high.
