Should Miwon Chemicals (KRX:134380) Be Disappointed With Their 38% Profit?
We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. For example, the Miwon Chemicals Co., Ltd. (KRX:134380), share price is up over the last year, but its gain of 38% trails the market return. However, the stock hasn't done so well in the longer term, with the stock only up 3.9% in three years.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year Miwon Chemicals grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 25%. The share price gain of 38% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Miwon Chemicals' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. We note that Miwon Chemicals' TSR, at 44% is higher than its share price return of 38%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
A Different Perspective
Miwon Chemicals shareholders gained a total return of 44% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 9% over half a decade This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. Is Miwon Chemicals cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
