How Much Did Kumkang Kind's(KRX:014280) Shareholders Earn From Share Price Movements Over The Last Five Years?
Kumkang Kind Co., Ltd. (KRX:014280) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 30% in the last quarter. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. After all, the share price is down 38% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

Given that Kumkang Kind only made minimal earnings in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue to gauge its business development. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.
Over half a decade Kumkang Kind reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 2.1% for each year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock hasn't done well for shareholders in the last five years, falling 7%, annualized. But it doesn't surprise given the falling revenue. It might be worth watching for signs of a turnaround - buyers are probably expecting one.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Kumkang Kind, it has a TSR of -33% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Kumkang Kind shareholders have received returns of 31% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. The silver lining is that the share price is up in the short term, which flies in the face of the annualised loss of 6% over the last five years. While 'turnarounds seldom turn' there are green shoots for Kumkang Kind. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
