Earnings Troubles May Signal Larger Issues for Sam-A Aluminium Company (KRX:006110) Shareholders
A lackluster earnings announcement from Sam-A Aluminium Company, Limited (KRX:006110) last week didn't sink the stock price. However, we believe that investors should be aware of some underlying factors which may be of concern.

A Closer Look At Sam-A Aluminium Company's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
For the year to December 2023, Sam-A Aluminium Company had an accrual ratio of 0.25. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, which is hardly a good thing. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of ₩64b, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of ₩3.41b. We also note that Sam-A Aluminium Company's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of ₩64b. Having said that it seems that a recent tax benefit and some unusual items have impacted its profit (and this its accrual ratio).

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Unfortunately (in the short term) Sam-A Aluminium Company saw its profit reduced by unusual items worth ₩3.4b. In the case where this was a non-cash charge it would have made it easier to have high cash conversion, so it's surprising that the accrual ratio tells a different story. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. Sam-A Aluminium Company took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to December 2023. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items made its statutory profit significantly weaker than it would otherwise be.
An Unusual Tax Situation
Moving on from the accrual ratio, we note that Sam-A Aluminium Company profited from a tax benefit which contributed ₩2.2b to profit. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! Of course, prima facie it's great to receive a tax benefit. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth.
Our Take On Sam-A Aluminium Company's Profit Performance
Summing up, Sam-A Aluminium Company's unusual items suggest that its statutory earnings were temporarily depressed, while its tax benefit is having the opposite effect, and its accrual ratio indicates a lack of free cash flow relative to profit. Based on these factors, we think it's very unlikely that Sam-A Aluminium Company's statutory profits make it seem much weaker than it is.
