Should You Be Adding NPC (KRX:004250) To Your Watchlist Today?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in NPC (KRX:004250). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is NPC Growing?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, NPC's EPS has grown 17% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). NPC's EBIT margins are flat but, of some concern, its revenue is actually down. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

NPC isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₩181b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are NPC Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own NPC shares worth a considerable sum. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at ₩63b, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 35% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

Does NPC Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, NPC's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for NPC (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you need to take into consideration.
