While Bolak Company Limited (KRX:002760) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 17% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. It's fair to say most would be happy with 184% the gain in that time. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

We don't think that Bolak's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last 5 years Bolak saw its revenue grow at 2.8% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering the bottom line. In comparison, the share price rise of 23% per year over the last half a decade is pretty impressive. While we wouldn't be overly concerned, it might be worth checking whether you think the fundamental business gains really justify the share price action. It may be that the market is pretty optimistic about Bolak.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Bolak's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Bolak's TSR of 191% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

Bolak shareholders gained a total return of 21% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 24% per year for five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Bolak (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
