Does Kopla's (KOSDAQ:126600) Share Price Gain of 60% Match Its Business Performance?

These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the Kopla Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:126600) share price is 60% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 41% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 25% in the last three years.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year Kopla grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 20%. The share price gain of 60% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Kopla's TSR for the last year was 64%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Kopla shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 64% over one year. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 1.4% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
