Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By MNtech Co., Ltd.'s (KOSDAQ:095500) 28% Share Price Surge
MNtech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:095500) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 28% share price jump in the last month. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 19% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think MNtech's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Chemicals industry is similar at about 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does MNtech's Recent Performance Look Like?
For example, consider that MNtech's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like MNtech's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 7.0%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 38% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.9% shows it's about the same on an annualised basis.
With this information, we can see why MNtech is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on assuming the company will continue keeping a low profile.
The Final Word
MNtech's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
It appears to us that MNtech maintains its moderate P/S off the back of its recent three-year growth being in line with the wider industry forecast. With previous revenue trends that keep up with the current industry outlook, it's hard to justify the company's P/S ratio deviating much from it's current point. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
