In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term DRTECH Corporation (KOSDAQ:214680) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 31% in three years, versus a market return of about 38%.

Because DRTECH made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over three years, DRTECH grew revenue at 12% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. Shareholders have endured a share price decline of 9% per year. This implies the market had higher expectations of DRTECH. However, that's in the past now, and it's the future is more important - and the future looks brighter (based on revenue, anyway).

A Different Perspective

DRTECH shareholders are down 8.8% for the year, but the broader market is up 47%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, the longer term story isn't pretty, with investment losses running at 9% per year over three years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for DRTECH you should know about.
