Earnings Not Telling The Story For Bio Plus Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:099430) After Shares Rise 29%
Bio Plus Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:099430) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 12% over that time.
Since its price has surged higher, Bio Plus may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 17.2x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios under 12x and even P/E's lower than 6x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For instance, Bio Plus' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like Bio Plus' to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.8%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 63% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 33% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's alarming that Bio Plus' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Bio Plus' P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Bio Plus revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
