Bio Plus Co., Ltd's (KOSDAQ:099430) Shares Climb 30% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Despite an already strong run, Bio Plus Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:099430) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 30% in the last thirty days. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 3.3% isn't as impressive.
After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 11x, you may consider Bio Plus as a stock to avoid entirely with its 23.6x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For instance, Bio Plus' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Bio Plus would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 28%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 54% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 34% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it concerning that Bio Plus is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Bio Plus' P/E?
Bio Plus' P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Bio Plus revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
