Additional Considerations Required While Assessing Bio Plus' (KOSDAQ:099430) Strong Earnings

Examining Cashflow Against Bio Plus' Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to December 2023, Bio Plus had an accrual ratio of 0.43. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. Even though it reported a profit of â‚©25.6b, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through â‚©1.3b in the last year. It's worth noting that Bio Plus generated positive FCF of â‚©6.7b a year ago, so at least they've done it in the past.

Our Take On Bio Plus' Profit Performance
As we discussed above, we think Bio Plus' earnings were not supported by free cash flow, which might concern some investors. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Bio Plus' underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. But at least holders can take some solace from the 20% EPS growth in the last year. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. Be aware that Bio Plus is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis and 1 of those can't be ignored...
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Bio Plus' profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
