Sempio's (KRX:007540) Sluggish Earnings Might Be Just The Beginning Of Its Problems
A lackluster earnings announcement from Sempio Company (KRX:007540) last week didn't sink the stock price. Our analysis suggests that along with soft profit numbers, investors should be aware of some other underlying weaknesses in the numbers.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
For anyone who wants to understand Sempio's profit beyond the statutory numbers, it's important to note that during the last twelve months statutory profit gained from ₩352m worth of unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Assuming those unusual items don't show up again in the current year, we'd thus expect profit to be weaker next year (in the absence of business growth, that is).
Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. Click here to be taken to our balance sheet analysis of Sempio.
An Unusual Tax Situation
Just as we noted the unusual items, we must inform you that Sempio received a tax benefit which contributed ₩236m to the bottom line. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth.
Our Take On Sempio's Profit Performance
In its last report Sempio received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. Furthermore, it also benefitted from a positive unusual item, which boosted the profit result even higher. Considering all this we'd argue Sempio's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. Our analysis shows 3 warning signs for Sempio (1 is significant!) and we strongly recommend you look at these before investing.
Our examination of Sempio has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. And, on that basis, we are somewhat skeptical. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. Some people consider a high return on equity to be a good sign of a quality business.
