SV Investment (KOSDAQ:289080) earnings and shareholder returns have been trending downwards for the last three years, but the stock hikes 13% this past week
It's nice to see the SV Investment Corporation (KOSDAQ:289080) share price up 13% in a week. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Regrettably, the share price slid 62% in that period. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years that the share price fell, SV Investment's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 48% each year. In comparison the 27% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So, despite the prior disappointment, shareholders must have some confidence the situation will improve, longer term. With a P/E ratio of 51.06, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

A Different Perspective
We regret to report that SV Investment shareholders are down 34% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 4.3%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 3% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
