We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But not every stock you buy will perform as well as the overall market. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Kukbo Design Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:066620) share price is up 25% in the last year, that falls short of the market return. The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 7.9% higher than it was three years ago.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year Kukbo Design grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 35%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 25% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about Kukbo Design as it was before. This could be an opportunity. The caution is also evident in the lowish P/E ratio of 7.69.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Kukbo Design's TSR for the last year was 27%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Kukbo Design shareholders are up 27% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 6% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
