Fursys' (KRX:016800) Problems Go Beyond Poor Profit

Fursys Inc.'s (KRX:016800) stock wasn't much affected by its recent lackluster earnings numbers. We did some digging, and we believe that investors are missing some worrying factors underlying the profit figures.

A Closer Look At Fursys' Earnings

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.

Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".

Over the twelve months to September 2025, Fursys recorded an accrual ratio of 0.24. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of ₩63b, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of ₩35.2b. We also note that Fursys' free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of ₩63b. Having said that, there is more to the story. The accrual ratio is reflecting the impact of unusual items on statutory profit, at least in part.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that Fursys' profit was boosted by unusual items worth ₩14b in the last twelve months. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. Fursys had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2025. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

Our Take On Fursys' Profit Performance

Summing up, Fursys received a nice boost to profit from unusual items, but could not match its paper profit with free cash flow. Considering all this we'd argue Fursys' profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
